What makes olive oil so healthy?

Olive oil exhibits many health benefits primarily due to unsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants. Olive oil is one of the best sources of unsaturated fatty acids, with content in Oleic Acid, a mono-unsaturated fatty acid, up to 83% and Linoleic Acid, a poly-unsaturated fatty acid, up to 21%. Unsaturated fatty acids are not only structural constituents of all cell membranes, but they also help maintain a healthy lipidemic profile, which promotes a healthier cardiovascular system and helps manage Diabetes.

The antioxidants found in olive oil (polyphenols, a-tocopherol, carotenoids etc.) are a large group of molecules that prevent oxidation, a reaction that produces harmful oxidation by-products throughout the body. Antioxidants’ ability to prevent oxidation helps protect against inflammation, various types of cancer and aging, and maintains the cardiovascular and neurological systems in good health.

Overall, the important thing to keep in mind is that olive oil is super healthy, as a natural fat full of antioxidants. It is crucial, though, to select the good olive oils, that is extra virgin olive oils. Try to prefer using extra virgin olive oil in your daily diet, for you and your family, as extra virgin olive oils are not diluted with cheaper oils.

Another important factor is knowing the source of your olive oil. To this end, choosing to buy from small producers ensures higher quality extra virgin olive oil, local taste and a sense of family sharing with them!
